Mikaela Casarez
From Melissa, Mikaela’s mom:
This award is for my beautiful daughter, Mikaela, who has lived with this horrible disease for 10 years now. She was diagnosed just two months after her 14th birthday, which is already such a difficult age even without factoring in Type 1. It has certainly been stressful and a struggle to manage throughout these years, but she just keeps pushing through it so bravely. She was married last year and gave birth to a healthy beautiful baby girl five weeks ago. She did amazing job managing her diabetes during the pregnancy and maintaining a 5.1–5.4 A1C throughout. Her Insulin Pump and Dexcom are truly a blessing that help relieve some of the burden and for that I am so grateful. I can’t wait to honor her with the 10 year medal in October on her Diabetes Anniversary date. I have so much admiration for all of the diabetes warriors, because as a mother who has been right beside her daughter struggling for so many years with this disease, I know the toll that it takes on them, as well as their caregivers.
