I was diagnosed in the 8th grade and didn’t find an endocrinologist until my senior year of high school so those first four years were rough because no one was really helping manage my diabetes and I would go to the emergency department with high blood sugar and ketones and they would fix that and send me home, but no one ever made any dose changes. After we finally found an endocrinologist things got much better and college was better but I still struggled some with managing everything. I was able to get my first pump in 1993 a couple months before I graduated from college and it was the best thing. I became a dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist so I can help people who are newly diagnosed have the tools I didn’t have. I also run our local diabetes camp and it is always the highlight of year. I am married and have two beautiful children and we love to travel together. Our most recent trip was out west and we saw six national parks and a lot of other beautiful places during our two weeks.
