My older sister Erin and I were diagnosed as T1D when the Canadian Kidney Association was doing urine tests at our elementary school. Both of our tests came back with loads of sugar in our pee. We had chicken pox about a year prior so that may have caused the attack on our islet cells. We initially had to check our pee for sugar as that was the only way to find out how we were doing. Things were not easy back then. There was diet pop but not a lot of other things that would be good for our diets. So we went along after a two-week stint in the hospital. Things have gotten better as technologies have advanced and become much more accurate. Am so glad to still be alive after all this time. I had lots of hypoglycemia unawareness incidents but have no extreme complications at all. So happy to be alive after all this time.
