I was 10 years old when we were on what seemed like the longest road trip ever, having to stop every 30-minutes to an hour so I could either use the restroom or get something to drink. My mom knew something wasn’t right and when we finally made the 2-day drive to Chicago to visit old neighbors. She had my blood sugar tested and her suspicion was confirmed – it was high. We cut our summer vacation short after a quick stop in Iowa to visit family and headed home to see my pediatrician for the official diagnosis. When I was diagnosed, we didn’t have all the fancy technology or fast-acting insulins that are available today – my supplies consisted of a glucometer, syringes, and 2-types of insulin – Regular and NPH. The doctors assured us that there would be a cure in the next 5 to 10 years, but as we all know, we’re still waiting……
