Diagnosed as a Child
Tineeshia Wheeler
I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with my daughter. I was put on a diet throughout the pregnancy, but unfortunately afterwards it turned into Type 1 Diabetes. I’ve since had twin boys, no complications with either pregnancy. I’m just grateful to still be striving with this unimaginable illness for this long.
Cynthia Kollar
I was diagnosed with type 1, or “sugar diabetes” in the summer between 8th grade and high school. I had had a high fever and measle-like spots over the fourth of July holiday and was told by my doctor not to go outside because I’d get scars. After that, I started having high blood sugar […]

Being diagnosed with diabetes since I was eight years old hasn’t always been easy. I struggled a lot growing up with being different and having to always do things differently. As I have grown older, I have learned to embrace the positive things that have come from having diabetes, such as my empathy and independence. […]

I was eight years old when my mom got the news that I had diabetes. We lived in a small town and there were no specialists to help us. Those were the days of urine testing and 1 shot per day. Diabetes management has come so far! My teens and early twenties were a wild […]

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of seven. My father was a Doctor at Johns Hopkins (Torrey C. Brown, MD). At the age of 10, I started on an insulin pump at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Probably one of the first persons in America. Traveling through life with this disease isn’t easy. […]
Aaralyn
From her mom, Laurie: My daughter, Aaralyn, was diagnosed one month before her 10th birthday. She had been loosing weight but we thought she was entering a growth spurt. I am embarrassed to admit that it took me several months to but everything together. We went to see her pediatrician on Saturday morning who immediately […]

I am 63 years old and was diagnosed at 13 years just entering high school. I was started on Pork Insulin Lente and Pork Regular insulin injections. My journey was not supported by my parents and I managed on my own all through high school and college. Urine testing was the only indicator if blood […]

Today (December 17) is my 11th Diaversary and looking back, it has been a journey. I was diagnosed my senior year of high school and I went on to college, graduate school, traveled outside of the country, and am now married! It is also wild to look back on how far the technology has come […]

My Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis at age 16 came out of nowhere. No one in my family had experienced it and I’m sure my parents didn’t think I’d live very long. At the time of my diagnosis, there was no self-monitoring other than urine testing which wasn’t of much benefit. I started out taking one […]
Rebecca
From her mom, Nancy: My daughter, Rebecca, was diagnosed with T1D after so many misdiagnoses by the time she turned eight years old. It was a traumatic experience for me, her, and my family. Soon after the diagnosis she was healing from all of her symptoms and accepting her new lifestyle. I was so proud […]
