This person has a little above the normal sugar level. No medications are taken. He takes care of his diet and does an hour walking daily. If he gets married, will there be problems for the children born of this marriage?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

I think you are asking what the risk to the baby would be if the father has diabetes, or pre-diabetes. There are a number of important risk factors for developing diabetes. Family history, such as having a parent with diabetes, is very important, but so is being overweight. Ethnic background is also important. People of Native American, Latino, African American, Pacific Islander and Asian American origin are higher risk. Being over age 45 and not exercising are also risk factors. So, if you marry someone with diabetes, your children are inheriting one of many risk factors. The most important thing to focus on is what you can change, such as losing weight, exercising more and eating a balanced, healthy diet.
