Question from Easton Pennsylvania, USA:
My 6 year old daughter had a A1c result of 7.6. The problem is she experiences low blood sugar around 40 often. Does insulin change the results of the A1c test? After a low blood sugar level incident, the doctor lowered the insulin dosage; I was wondering if we should have an additional test taken?
Answer:

HgbA1c reflects the average blood sugar over the past 2-3 months. Usually this test is done every 3 months.
Changes in insulin doses eventually affect the HgbA1c by changing the blood sugar.
