Recently diagnosed with type 1, I have restricted my diet to very low/no carbohydrates and have been able to maintain my target blood sugars, without ketones, with Lantus only. Can you give me an in-depth explanation of what basal insulin does? I have been reading up on it and concluded that it merely aims to keep your blood sugar stable aligning with your hepatic endogenous glucose production, that it has little to do with food or lowering blood sugar.

My young granddaughter has just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes was hospitalized for three days. When I was at the hospital, the nurse would give my granddaughter her insulin two hours after she ate. Should I be giving her insulin after two hours? Someone told me you should give the insulin a half-hour after eating.
