Question from Victoria, Minnesota, USA:

My 9 year old was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. After her evening snack, prior to taking her sugar level test and insulin, can she have sugar free jello or any “free food?” Or will that give an exaggerated sugar level?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

A free food can be used at any time and should have a very minimal effect on blood glucose levels; however, why are you testing after her evening snack? We always have said to do so before your evening snack. If the evening snack and test were done around the same time, that would be okay, but not if the snack is eaten and the blood glucose testing is done an hour later.
