Question from Salem, Massachusetts, USA:

My wife has Type 2 diabetes, diagnosed 4 years ago, and she is on no medication for it. She would like to take St. John’s Wort to help relieve stress, and would like to know if it is safe to use in her case.

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

St John’s Wort is not specifically contraindicated for someone with diabetes. It is important though that she obtains the product from a reputable source, because at the present the FDA has essentially no control over quality or labelling. Your wife should also be sure to tell her doctor about any dietary supplement.
