Question from Magnolia, Texas, USA:
Our son, age 11, was diagnosed Type 1 one week ago. We are trying to plan a backpack-camping trip. Do you have any tips or recommendations that might help me plan a trip with a youngster that has always be able to go on such a trip with out any special considerations? He love to fish, hunt, and camp, and was afraid that these items would not be possible.
Answer:
Make sure to keep in touch with his doctor or diabetes team to help adjust the insulin during the trip. It is quite possible that his insulin requirements may decrease significantly as the honeymoon period begins.
Also , in general when travelling, bring extra supplies, keep the insulin out of hot or freezing temperatures, and do extra blood glucose monitoring as vacations can change insulin requirements significantly. Carry plenty of food with you.
Have a great trip.
