Insulin
Question from The Netherlands:
Our doctor proposed to switch insulin for our daughter, who is 4 years old. Now she uses Mixtard 40/60 in the morning and Humalog in the evening. The doctor likes her to switch both injections to Humalog Mix25, but they have no experience with this type of insulin for children. Are there experiences with using this insulin for young children?
Answer:
The first question to ask is: Is your daughter’s control good with the insulin regimen that she’s on? If yes, then there is no need to change. Personally I have no experience of using the new mix in young children but there are some theoretical benefits and it is licensed so you can be sure that it is safe. Her eating pattern may have to be a little different. You need to discuss all of the issues with your daughter’s diabetes team.
