Family Planning
Question from Frederick, Maryland, USA:
I am very worried about a friend of mine who is approximately seven weeks pregnant and has type 2 diabetes. Her blood sugar stayed around 400 mg/dl [22.2mmol/L] during the first four weeks of pregnancy, she is extremely overweight, she has endometriosis, and she had uterine cancer a few years ago as well as cervical cancer last year. Part of her cervix was removed, she says that they may have to sew her cervix shut. She has also had two miscarriages before. What are her chances of coming through this with a healthy baby? What complications might she have?
Answer:
Your friend needs to get her sugars under control and consult with a high-risk specialist about a possible cerclage (stitch around the cervix). She is at high risk of another miscarriage.
