Question from Canada:

I am Chinese, I was 21 years old when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and there is no history of diabetes in my family. I am in my honeymoon phase, I require no insulin, but I still take 1 unit of NPH a day. How common is type 1B diabetes for my race? Should I have an antibody test?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

It is true that Chinese people have lower incidence rates of type 1 diabetes, compared to northern Europeans. However, no ethnic groups are spared. The antibody test is helpful when the diagnosis is in doubt.
