The kidneys normally reabsorb nearly all filtered glucose, but, when the blood sugar level exceeds about 180 mg/dl [10 mmol/L], they t can no longer do so and must use ‘free water’ to get the extra glucose into the urine. This in turn can lead to thirst and dehydration.
