Aches and Pains
Question from Israel:
Our three and a half year old daughter, diagnosed at age 12 months with type 1 diabetes and recently started on the insulin pump, has been complaining occasionally of stomach pain soon after eating, and we have noticed a rise in blood sugars after meals that then return to normal. Could this be causing her stomach pain, or should we be looking at other possibilities?
Answer:
It depends upon how high her sugars are going after meals and how quickly afterwards. Share her detailed blood sugar results with your daughter’s team. Pain itself can cause rises in blood sugar. If the results are very high, then check her urine for ketones. She could be having acid reflux into her gullet causing discomfort. Discuss with your daughter’s team.

[Editor’s comment: Your might also ask that your daughter be checked for celiac disease which can cause symptoms such as this.
