Daily Care
Question from Michigan, USA:
My 9 year old son was diagnosed 6 months ago. His management team want his sugar between 100 and 200. Lately, it has been fluctuating from 37-515. We haven’t had to change his diet, only paying more attention to carbs. Is this normal? Also, does drinking water help lower high sugar readings?
Answer:
It is important to drink enough fluids to maintain hydration. If your child’s blood sugar has been high for a bit, it is important to replace fluids lost from the high blood sugar leading to increased urination. As far as blood sugars go, they will fluctuate. Just do your best to take into account the many factors involved. During the first few months of diabetes, the numbers may be more even as your child’s own insulin helps to keep the blood sugar in balance. As your child makes less insulin, you will likely see more variability in the readings.
Work closely with pediatric diabetes specialists to do the best you can.
