Question from San Francisco, California, USA:
I was told that if you put insulin on your food you can eat anything you want. Is this true?
Answer:

False. Putting insulin on your food has very little effect on blood sugars and has no place in the treatment of diabetes.

Additional comments from Lois Schmidt Finney, diabetes dietitian:
Insulin can not be absorbed by the gut, which is why we can not give it orally. It must be given subcutaneously (or, rarely, directly into a vein).
