Question from Virginia, USA:

My nine child has diabetes and is on the football team. At registration, we found out that he is over the weight limit by about five pounds. How can we safely get him within the weight limits without cutting back his calories?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

A visit with your child’s diabetes team is recommended in order to assess his nutrition and insulin needs. Sometimes weight limits are not designed for the best of health when athletics are involved (case in point: losing weight to fit in a certain weight class for wrestling). Your dietitian will be able to formulate a meal plan that is appropriate for maintaining a healthy weight while providing for continued normal growth.
