What would cause insulin resistance in a 34 year old woman with type 1 diabetes that has been under control for four years?

At the risk of heresy, why would you think that a person with type�1A (autoimmune) diabetes could not also develop type 2 diabetes? They are totally different diseases with totally different causes.
Insulin resistance is inherited. People with insulin resistance have a tendency to be overweight with a “pot belly”. They have a tendency to hypertension, elevated lipids and also diabetes. Since aging contributes, time is the enemy.
I firmly believe a person can get “both” types of diabetes.
