Tight Control

Question from Connecticut, USA:

My daughter, age 12, was diagnosed with Type 1 two months ago. She is currently taking NPH and Humalog twice daily at breakfast and dinner time. We seem to have problems keeping her within range because she exercises quite vigorously which tends to drop her blood sugar even though her dosages are small and we even eliminate the use of Humalog sometimes. Would a regimen of other types of insulin with more frequent injections allow us to keep tighter control on her blood sugar levels?

It is possible that using Humalog before meals and a long acting insulin like NPH at night (or another similar program) may be the answer and give more flexibility. It would be useful, especially if your child is very active. It is worth discussing this with your diabetes team.
