Question from Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada:

Is it healthy for have a nine year old with diabetes to have her levels jump very high (around 20 mmol/L [360 mg/dl]) then very low (around 5 mmol/L [90 mg/dl]) due to lack of proper supervision?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

In general, having blood glucose readings as stable as possible is the best control to have. However, it is impossible to have perfect readings. If control is erratic, it may affect overall control (HbA1c ) and can also predispose to severe hypoglycemia, which should be avoided. There are often several reasons for erratic readings, not just poor supervision, so it is worth talking things over with this child’s diabetes team.
