Thyroid
Question from the Netherlands:
Our 16 year old daughter has diabetes for 9 years now. At present, antibodies have been found (early stage) in the thyroid and we are wondering what medication/treatment is done in this respect and whether there is a possibility to stop this at this early stage? We only found one article on the subject, but there were no details on treatment. Would be much obliged if you could suggest any information that may be of help.
Answer:
The current management as with any other autoimmune disease is when antibodies are present, there is currently no standard treatment for preventing the progression and natural history of disease.
Thus with thyroid antibodies, the disease will progress to result in hypothyroidism at some stage.
