The longer someone remains in poor control of their diabetes, the more at risk they are for developing the long-term complications of diabetes — which may include heart disease, vascular (or blood vessel) disease, kidney problems that may lead to kidney failure, blindness, and neuropathy (problems with the nerves of the body). All of these may contribute to a shorter lifespan. In addition, poor control of diabetes also places that person at risk for short-term problems with their diabetes — including diabetic ketoacidosis.
It really is worth it to work for better control of diabetes! A good diabetes team can really help.
