My daughter’s infusion set pulls out every time it gets the slightest bit wet. She is using the Silhouette� infusion sets, mainly in her buttocks due to the fact that she is very thin. We prep the site with Skin Prep, followed by a layer of Tegaderm and then by another layer of Tegaderm over the infusion set with a hole cut out over the site. When she showers, we cover the site with plastic wrap and waterproof tape. but it still manages to get a little wet and pulls out. We have tried Attachol, but she had an allergic reaction to this. With swimming season here, we are going crazy trying to figure out a way to stop this. Do you have any suggestions?

You may need to consider using a basal/bolus regimen with Lantus as basal bedtime and Humalog or NovoLog as bolus ( for meals and corrections) during the summer. You also might consider the Insulflon to decrease the number of “sticks”.

Additional comments from Dr. Linda A Dimeglio:From one of our nurses: I wonder if they have tried any other types of tape? Some families find that one type of tape might not attach well, while another works very well. I have families try Polyskin II (which seems to hold pretty well), or IV 3000 (which I don’t like as well, but I have families who swear by it). The point is not to stop at just trying Tegaderm. Each person’s skin is different and may require something a little out of the ordinary to hold well. Make sure that the Skin Prep is dry before putting on the tape. There are also alternatives in the liquid adhesive line that this family might try. I would encourage them to do a search of the different types of liquid adhesives to see if there is a hypoallergenic product that they could try.
