Diagnosis and Symptoms
Question from Pretoria, South Africa:
According to tests, I am insulin intolerant. Will exercise help this “condition”?
Answer:
You probably mean insulin resistant — which means that a higher insulin concentration in the blood is needed in order to obtain the same blood sugar lowering effect. Are you overweight? This is one of the most important reasons to have decreased insulin sensitivity with insulin resistance.
You probably need a proper nutritional assessment to develop a meal plan geared for your lifestyle and achieving ideal body weight. In addition, you should check your blood lipids and your blood pressure and ask for a cardiovascular consultation before starting any physical exercise program.
Recent secondary prevention trials such as the Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study and the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) have shown that regular aerobic exercise of medium intensity (at least 150 minutes per week and not walking the ‘shopping’ promenade) reduces the risk of diabetes by 58%.
