Question from London, England:
I know of a west African woman who has gestational diabetes. Is there a relationship between a certain diet consumed during pregnancy and the development of gestational diabetes?
Answer:
From: DTeam Staff
Diet can affect how well a pregnant woman tolerates glucose, but the cause of gestational diabetes is from placental hormones that increase insulin resistance. Often, gestational diabetes can be managed by placing a woman on a diet that is low in fat and higher in protein and complex carbohydrates (pasta, grains, etc).
