Question from Canberra, Australia:

My 30 year old friend had gestational diabetes requiring insulin. When she returned to the endocrinologist for her six-week check-up, her levels were very high and she has been diagnosed with type1 diabetes. Is it likely that she had diabetes prior to becoming pregnant which she was unaware of?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

It is possible that your friend had diabetes prior to pregnancy or still has some degree of insulin resistance that is taking longer to resolve. Sometimes the diagnosis of diabetes is not made until a woman has a screening test during pregnancy. The symptoms made not have been very dramatic prior to the pregnancy.
