My three year old son gets a combination of NPH and Humalog in the morning. Sometimes, we draw the dose, get his meal together, and given the injection once he is eating. How long can the dose stay good in the syringe? Should it be given within five to ten minutes of combining the insulins or does it matter?

You probably can keep the Humalog and NPH together for at least an hour, but why not merely draw up the insulin mixture immediately after the meal is eaten, if you are giving it after food? Then, you would not have to worry about any mixing problems in the syringe at all. At most, you are likely saving about 32 seconds by drawing up the insulin ahead of food instead of afterwards.
