Question from Blair, Oklahoma, USA:

My daughter will be five in a couple of weeks. She had a blood sugar test done today a few hours after she ate and the reading was 175 mg/dl [9.7 mmol/L]. She has had a lot of urinary tract infections and drank a lot of water. She complains of stomach aches and head aches along with her back hurting. The only thing odd is that she has gained weight and not lost. Should we be concerned? She has also had sugar in her urine.

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

175 mg/dl [9.7 mmol/L] isn’t normal and isn’t diabetes as it was not over 200 mg/dl [11.1 mmol/L]. Watch carefully. Do more sugar checks, either in blood or urine at home. If persistent glucose is in her urine, check her blood. If the fasting level is over 126 mg/dl [7.0 mmol/L] or any over 200 mg/dl [11.1 mmol/L], see the doctor right away.
