Question from Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan:

Does diabetes affect your sexuality?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

It has been shown through medical research that people with diabetes can have complications, even if there sugars are under good control in the present. For instance, eye, nerve, or kidney problems may develop from exposure to previously high sugar values over a number of years. It is the cumulative time spent under the conditions of high blood sugars that appear to have the biggest effect.

Diabetes is a common cause for males to have problems having erections. This is a manifestation of problems that affect the nervous system, also known as neuropathy. In order for a male to have an erection, the nervous system has to tell the penis to fill with blood. If that communication does not develop, there will be no erection. The new medications, such as Viagra, have been able to treat problems with erections in males with diabetes with some success. You need to see your doctor about this if you are having these problems.
