Aches and Pains
Question from Spiceland, Indiana, USA:
My daughter complains of leg pain, aching at least once or twice a week. She has type 1 diabetes and Myasthenia Gravis. The neurologist can find no leg weakness and/or cause for the pain. Could this be related to her diabetes? She has excellent control of her blood sugars. She takes metformin two times a day and 5 mg of prednisone every other day. Ibuprofen does not seem to help.
Answer:
You did not provide a hemoglobin A1c level, which would give some indication of how her glucose levels are controlled. If the A1c is less than 7.5%, it is unlikely that the complaints are related to diabetes. You should discus this with your diabetes team and perhaps ask them to also consult with your neurologist. Some relaxation techniques, even for young children may be helpful, including yoga and stress reduction modalities for such problems. Other pain medications also may be tried in consultation with your physicians. Occasionally subtle vitamin or mineral deficiencies may be involved. Prednisone treatment can also be associated with such complaints.
