Question from Cary, North Carolina, USA:
I know each case is different, but how long does it typically take for a Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults patient to require some type of treatment other than diet and exercise? How close are researchers to finding a way to prolong or stop the autoimmune process in these patients who seem to have a “window of opportunity” that is typically longer than a normal honeymoon in type 1 diabetes?
Answer:
The range is very wide, varying from months to years. The prevention of diabetes or the prolongation of beta cell function is the goal of current investigators associated with the study group TrialNet which will include a lot of different investigators in a network designed to offer studies geared at the above mentioned goal. We are not there yet.
