Question from Virginia, USA:
Can you please comment on the most cost-effective, environmentally friendly method of syringe/lancet disposal? The cost of mail back systems quickly adds up and coffee cans/thick containers are not a foolproof method (the top can get punctured, syringes/lancets spill out). The Disintegrator works great, but costs over $100 and I’m not sure how long the unit will last. The BD syringe clipper is cheap, but are the syringes/lancets safe to be thrown in the trash afterward?
Answer:
The Centers for Disease Control offers Safe Community Needle Disposal guidelines for many states, including Virginia, your state. In particular, they note:
Sharps that are used in single- or multiple-family residences must be placed in an opaque container that is highly puncture-resistant and labeled with the words “Do Not Recycle, Medical Waste” before they are mixed with other wastes or disposed.
