Question from Stirling, Scotland, UK:

My son, who has type 1 diabetes, is also intolerant of phenylalamines (sweeteners) so we are finding it near impossible to give him anything to drink except milk and water. He was also intolerant to lactose as an infant.

Answer:

Generally, as you have realised many sugar free drinks have phenylalanine as flavourings. Some diluting juices are okay. Once diluted there is not much sugar in the drink, so these should be okay. There are some bottled flavoured waters that don’t contain phenylalanine, but the only thing to do is to read the labels on the drinks in the supermarkets. The good thing is that labelling in the UK is generally good on foods and they are accurate.
