Can diabetes destroy the tissues or ligaments surrounding the knees?

Diabetes can involve the skeleton, especially in the hands and feet where there are tendons that slide through tunnels that attach to digits. (When this occurs, there is also an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.) The large joints in the hip and the knees receive so much wear and tear that their involvement from diabetes is less clear, especially if subjects are overweight.
