The Somogyi Effect refers to the phenomenon of post-hypoglycemic hyperglycemia. It is diagnosed by serial blood sugar measurements, and, in diabetes, it is treated by appropriate adjustment of the insulin dose. The dawn phenomenon is an example of this effect. Brain damage is not caused by this response although the antecedent hypoglycemia may do this over time. Brain cells counts are not possible in vivo.
