Question from New Jersey, USA:
My daughter, who has type 1 diabetes, has high blood pressure, and recently went into kidney failure. She just found out she is pregnant but is very concerned about what problems may come out of this pregnancy. What advice can you give?
Answer:

Your daughter should be seeing a high risk pregnancy specialist. There is a great deal of maternal and fetal evaluation and monitoring that needs to be done. If she can keep her blood pressure under control and maintain acceptable kidney function, she may do well. However, she is definitely at risk of poor fetal growth and preeclampsia which could lead to pre-term delivery.
