Question from St. Louis, Missouri, USA:
My 71 year old husband, who has type 2 diabetes, is currently undergoing radiation treatment for prostrate cancer and his blood sugars have been running high (around 200 to 240 mg/dl [11.1-13.3 mmol/L]. Today he had a urine test done and he has a bladder infection and will be taking medicine. Could this be from the high blood sugar?

It is true that high sugars put individuals at increased risk of infections. On the other hand, your husband’s blood sugars can be elevated as a result of the infection.
