Question from Virginia, USA:

As a person with diabetes, I have given whole blood many times. The blood collection agencies around here, have a liberal donation policy when it comes to that. I have heard that giving apheresis is excluded to anyone on an insulin pump because of the possibility of germs entering the body through the infusion site. Is this true? In terms of diabetes, is apheresis/leukapheresis just as safe, for the donor, as a regular whole blood donation?

I do not know what the rules and restrictions on this are.
