Question from Lancaster, Texas, USA:

My child was tested for diabetes today by doing a blood test. He then drank a huge bottle of glucose and waited an hour. Then, the blood test was redone and we waited another hour. Then, the blood test was redone. The doctor called and said that he believes he has diabetes. The first test was 84 mg/dl [4.7 mmol/L]. The second test was 83 mg/dl [4.6 mmol/L] and the last test was 84 mg/dl [4.7 mmol/L]. The doctor is perplexed because he said his glucose should have gone up, but, instead, stayed the same. The reason the doctor did the test was my son’s bad headaches. The doctor said to try to orange juice to see if that helps. The teacher said that after watching him, she can tell when he is getting a headache and down. She said that within 20 to 30 minutes of giving him the orange juice he is back to his old self. Can you please give me your opinion in this matter? I am extremely stressed out and he is only eight years old. My husband thinks it is type 1.

That is a normal result for a glucose tolerance test and likely confirms that your son does not have diabetes at this time. Your physician should be working with you in follow-up to determine the cause of your son’s headaches. Make sure to also have your son’s vision tested as this represents a very common cause for headaches in children.
