I’ve heard a lot about an “artificial pancreas”‘ that is being developed. Is there any hope for it being available in the near future?

It is not likely in the near future but, one never knows when science will make a big leap. We have the understanding of what is required and actually have out-of-body artificial pancreases for several decades. Thanks to the space programs, we have small and efficient batteries and small pumping mechanisms as well as microcircuitry. We also have implantable pumps and concentrated insulin. But, we do not have a viable, reliable and inexpensive meter to measure blood glucose or the equivalent yet. There are many prototype models for such a meter but, they are not ready for large scale use and production. All the meter companies are working on this and all the pump companies are working on this plus many other independent researchers as well.
