I’ve read that more and more children are getting diabetes. How many children in the U.S. have diabetes? What is the age distribution?

Approximately one in 800 children in the U.S. have type 1 diabetes. With the rising epidemic of obesity not only in the U.S. but all around the world, we are now also seeing type 2 diabetes develop in younger children as a direct consequence of their obesity.
Overall, type 1 and type 2 diabetes together occur in about 5% of the population and there may be another 3 to 5% who have diabetes, usually type 2, and do not yet know this. If you go to the American Diabetes Association or the International Diabetes Federation web sites, there are more specific references with more up-to-date statistics.
