You are correct when you suggest that people with high blood sugar make more urine. The high glucose causes an osmotic diuresis. In effect, the high glucose in the urine pulls water with it from the kidneys. Only late in kidney failure do you have a marked decrease in urine production. Overall, the amount of urine does not reflect kidney function.
