Blood Tests and Insulin Injections, Other
Question from Brooklyn, Connecticut, USA:
My 17 year old son has found out he has diabetes. His blood sugar goes up and down. What would cause this? Also, he gets moody. Does this have any thing to do with diabetes? He has had blood work done.
Answer:
When someone has diabetes, his or her blood sugars do tend to go up and down. Things that can make blood sugar too high include: too many carbohydrates (and not enough insulin), not enough exercise or activity, not enough insulin, illness, or physical or emotional stress. Things that can make blood sugar too low include: too much insulin (and not enough food), a lot of exercise without eating a snack or adjusting insulin, or skipping a meal or snack.
Moodiness might be a sign of low blood glucose. But, it also might have nothing to do with blood sugar levels.
