Other Illnesses
Question from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA:
What affect would type 1 diabetes have on my 17 month old daughter who has been diagnosed with sickle cell anemia? I have just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. It runs in my family. My daughter is to be tested soon. Would the diabetes be worse because of the sickle cell?
Answer:
The biggest problem with having both sickle cell anemia and type 1 diabetes would be living with two serious, chronic illness. Also, the usual monitoring test for diabetes, hemoglobin A1c, would be inaccurate and you would have to monitor her with an alternative test such as fructosamine. Sickle cell crises would also likely have some impact on immediate glucose control, but I actually do not have any experience with a child having both these illnesses and suspect that they are quite rare to occur together. Perhaps one genetic illnesses “protects” against the other?
