Question from Bay City, Michigan, USA:
My nine-year-old daughter has type 1 diabetes. She was diagnosed at age two. She has not grown very much in the past few years. Can insulin negatively affect the way a child grows? Also, she has never been overweight in the past, however, now is developing a round, protruding stomach. Any tips?

Children with diabetes fail to grow for all the same reasons as children who do not have diabetes. She needs evaluation for control first, but checks for other endocrine diseases and celiac disease, too.
