Question from India:
There are a few links between type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance with systemic inflammation caused by inflammatory cytokines from visceral adiposity. Is this correct? If yes, will there be more iron utilization, more oxidative stress and increased usage of iron resulting in anemia or excessive absorption of iron due to such systemic inflammation? Furthermore, can type 2 diabetics with persistent hyperglycemia experience increased gastric acid, maybe due to enhanced iron digestion?
Answer:
Yes, that is one of the working hypotheses. However, it is a working hypothesis and not proven. I am not aware that acid secretion has been shown to be associated with level of hyperglycemia.
