Question from Dallas Center, Iowa, USA:

We are having some challenges with our local school in regards to where our son stores his blood glucose monitor and checks his blood glucose. We would like him to store and use his glucose meter either in his book bag or in his locker so he can check his number freely. They have only a part time nurse and when she leaves in the afternoon, they lock her office. Do you have any polls that indicate where children across the country in different school systems check their blood glucose or do you have any information that may be of assistance to us?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

The best practice for school blood glucose management, as supported by the diabetes medical community, is that children who possess the needed levels of maturity, skill, and knowledge should be able to self-carry and self-monitor and treat anywhere, any time with physician and parent authorization. I suggest parents write this provision in your child’s Section 504 Plan or IEP. For more information and assistance with your situation, please call 1-800-DIABETES and check out the American Diabetes Association’s Safe at School program.
