Question from Torrance, California, USA:

My nephew has type 1 diabetes. He uses insulin shots, diet and exercise to control his blood sugar. Since his diagnosis a year ago, he has been on a low carbohydrate diet, which excludes milk, fruit juices, fresh fruits, etc. He has not grown taller since last year. Is this a matter of concern? Have you have any information that a low carbohydrate diet or/and type 1 inhibits growth in pre-teen boys?

Answer:

From: DTeam Staff

Your nephew’s lack of growth might be due to nutritional deficiencies. Please ask your pediatrician or general practitioner for a consultation with a dietitian involved in the care of children with type 1 diabetes. A low carbohydrate diet is not the best nutritional approach/treatment for a child with type 1 diabetes and actually is not prescribed to diabetic children any longer.
